Chicken Coop and Baby Chicks

July 23, 2024

I have dreamed of having chickens roaming around my backyard for 10+ years and 2024 came the year to build the coop and purchase the chicks!

I’m not going to share about the hours research I did and the hard work we all put into building the coop, but I will share a few photos and our though process (creative process) throughout the build and gaining 7 new tiny additions to the Ramsey Haushold.

For this project, unlike most others, I brought all the research and design and Alexander made the dreams become a reality. With the screenshots I saved on my phone and pins over the years, he took everything I showed him, drew it out, added measurements, mapped it out in our living room and got to work. He’s pretty innovative, so he used mostly scrap wood he had saved from other projects, our neighbor randomly had the exact amount of chicken wire we needed and let us have it, and Alexander found hinged and a latch that would work with the style, he bought shaker roof shingles and he started building. Along the way, both kids helped rake the location where the coop would be built and Alexander’s dad helped with the two-man job aspects that I wouldn’t be able to do. It was a total family effort! Once the coop was off to a good start I ordered the chicks and other necessary items to keep them alive and healthy, and within a few weeks everything was finished and the chicks arrived.

The day me and the kids picked up our newly born and very fuzzy little chicks from the post office was a special day for me. The windows were open, kids were making mud pies, birds were singing and their songs were wafting through the kitchen in the perfect late afternoon sun as I did the dishes. I could hear little cheeps echoing from the front hall and all I could think was “this is living.” It was a mix of several dreams wrapped up in one moment. Gratitude was all I felt.

Here are a few snapshots of all our willing hands creating moments of a life well lived.
